Born on June 29, 1976, in Amritsar, Punjab, Saurabh Kalia dreamt of serving his country from an early age. After completing his education, he joined the prestigious Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. In 1999, at the age of 22, he was commissioned into the 4 Jat Regiment of the Indian Army.
During the Kargil War, Captain Saurabh Kalia and his five members’ patrol team were on a routine patrol of the Bajrang Post in the Kaksar sector of Ladakh . On May 15, 1999, they were captured by Pakistani forces in a treacherous act of aggression. Over the next twenty-two days, Captain Kalia and his team endured unimaginable torture at the hands of their captors. Despite immense suffering, they displayed immense resilience, determination, and unwavering love for their motherland.
Regrettably, Captain Saurabh Kalia and his five comrades, Sepoys Arjun Ram, Bhanwar Lal Bagaria, Bhika Ram, Moola Ram, and Naresh Singh, were brutally martyred. Their sacrifices and the cruelty they faced exposed the world to the brutality of war and the resilience of the Indian Armed Forces.
